Mr. and Mrs. Kirbie are thankful. Before even knocking on their apartment door, I could hear Sophie, their little dog, barking, and Mr. Kirbie telling me to come on in.
Life for J.B. and Hazel Kirbie is simple and happy. Even with a wounded ankle, Mrs. Kirbie, 88, remains as active as possible. She enjoyed telling me the story of their retirement home's annual Valentine's Day Dance. Mrs. Kirbie couldn't wait to dance, and she was the first one out on the dance floor, with the assistance of a staff member.
In addition to providing breakfast, lunch and dinner there are games and activities for the residents to partake in, which Mrs. Kirbie enjoys immensely. Mrs. Kirbie was a visitor in her local 'Kitchen Band' when she found out about the facility.
The Kirbie's apartment has all of the necessary amenities, including a beautiful wall that houses J.B.'s Medal of Honor and picture with his company from WWII.
At 92, Mr. Kirbie realizes that he and his wife probably would not have the opportunity to live in their current location if not for the aid and attendance benefit. Mr. and Mrs. Kirbie realized they were eligible for the benefit thanks to Veteran's Home Care of Texas.
Veteran's Home Care of Texas is an agency designed to assist and manage at home personal care for veterans and/or surviving spouses. Some examples of assistance are walking, bathing, dressing, shopping, light housekeeping and transportation.
"It's nice to get help, you just have to know where to find it," said Mrs. Kirbie.
